'Lives Apart'
I am pleased to present my curated exhibition, 'Lives Apart,' which took place on July 13th and 14th, 2023, at OCAD University's Great Hall. This unique showcase explored the dual lives of international students through 20 diverse artists with artworks in various media, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed media. The theme delved into the emotional, social, and cultural dimensions of the international student experience, illustrating the dichotomy faced by individuals living in at least two different countries. As the curator of this exhibition, it was my vision to create an immersive and engaging experience for visitors. Collaborating with fellow student monitor Nader Soliman, we carefully reviewed and selected artworks from 20 international student artists, ensuring a representation of diverse nationalities, cultures, and artistic styles. The 'Lives Apart' exhibition was made possible through funding from the International Student Support Office. Additionally, I took on the responsibilities of preparing printouts for digital artists, designing the event flyer, creating call for submission forms, and coordinating with selected artists to ensure the timely arrival of their artwork. From the initial concept to the meticulous setup on exhibition day, I oversaw every aspect of the project, ensuring its successful execution. My dedication extended to promotional efforts through various channels, and I was present throughout the exhibition to address visitor inquiries. Notably, collaborations with OCADU LIVE allowed us to host and record artist talks, further engaging our audience.
The Great Hall was transformed into a dynamic space, with 20 carefully selected artworks strategically arranged on two sides. The layout ingeniously mirrored the dichotomy experienced by international students, featuring a 'home' side and a 'new home' side. This intentional arrangement fostered a compelling dialogue between the artworks, symbolically representing the multifaceted lives of those navigating the challenges and joys of being international students.
Each piece was curated to contribute to the overarching narrative, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for visitors. The exhibition layout was enhanced with clear signage, strategic lighting, and, where necessary, subtle soundscapes, enriching the overall atmosphere and inviting viewers to connect with the artworks on a deeper level. The juxtaposition of various artistic styles and cultural perspectives further enriched the narrative, offering a nuanced understanding of the diverse international student community.
The concept behind 'Lives Apart' was not only to showcase the artworks but also to provide a platform for dialogue and introspection. The exhibition's layout aimed to guide visitors through a contemplative journey, encouraging them to reflect on their own perceptions and understanding of the international student experience. This holistic approach to curation reinforced the exhibition's purpose, fostering a meaningful connection between the audience and the showcased artworks. 'Lives Apart' wasn't merely an exhibition; it was an immersive exploration of the human experience, skillfully curated to provoke thought, emotion, and cross-cultural understanding.
